Chat by typing in the box with the blinken cursor in it. There are several commands you can use for funky stuff starting with "/". Most of these are unimportant, but some pertinent ones are: change your name using "/nick $newname" (sans "s) (alternatively, use the 'Change nick to' box in the bottom right); private message people using "/msg $username $message"; join new channels using "/join #channelname".

It's advised that you register your prefered nick with nickserv, so that other people can't pinch it. Use "/msg nickserv help" in the text entry box for more information on this.

If you want to say something to a specific person inside a channel (rather than via /msg), its useful to say their name before the message; many stand-alone clients will flash something at you if your name is said in a channel. This one doesn't but does highlight lines with your name in so they stand out better.
